Color Changing Flowers!

A group of children came in one morning and started making flowers out of the pipe cleaners.  Since then, they have been so interested in learning about flowers and plants.  Our garden is contributing so much to this project since the children started gardening outside and seeing their plants grow!

The subject of how flowers grow and what they need to grow is in many of our conversations.

We are using real flowers and do an experiment to help the children learn how water travels through the parts of a flower and plants.  At the end of our experiment, we are seeing the white flowers change to  a different colors!

                                        We all got our materials ready and picked out our own flower..

                                 Adding color to the water was a great opportunity for us to use our color mixing skills.   This group decided to mix yellow and blue so they could make green!

We learned how to cut our stem at a certain angle so that it would drink the water really good and our flowers turn a dark color!

             When the flowers were in the water, we talked about what we thought was going to happen to the white flowers.  We all created a picture of what our color changing flower would turn out to look like!

We were very excited to come in the next morning and see our first day result!!!

This experiment has helped the children learn about the system of the plant in a more dynamic way.   We are now understanding about plants and their functions...

We are focusing on the seed, root, stem, leaves, veins and flower!

Wonderland Couture

We have a future fashion designer in the building! We were looking at the new sewing book in our classroom and the girls didn't see a dress in there. One of the girls decided she would like to make one of her own. At first she cut it out herself and realized it was uneven. She also wasn't sure if it was her size. She than brought a dress of her own and that's how she began to learn how to measure,cut and sew!

She used news paper to trace the dress...

She than began cutting it out...

She learned how to pin the newspaper to the cloth she would use for her new dress..

Some of the other girls even helped her and they were very careful and safe with the pins!

Of course once the first dress was done, they couldn't wait to get started on a second dress :-)

She wanted straps on her dress, so we measured her body to see how long the straps should be.  The girls measured 12 inches for the straps.  They measured out the ribbon she would put on her dress.

Next we talked about how fashion designers use style books to show their clothing. She made a cover page for her book.....

And each page is going to show a picture of the dress and samples of the fabrics and lace she used to make the dress....

This ongoing project has inspired the children to create more clothes like shirts and skirts. The other students in the class have now decided the would like to make their very own shirts with designs they drew!

We may have a fashion show at Little Wonders very soon! ;-)

A Visit From The Mail Woman!

The children have been talking about sending out letters to family and friends. This has opened up an opportunity for our children to explore this topic and learn about our mailing system!
The children did some homework and learned their addresses which they brought back with a stamp and envelope to mail out to their friends!

                          We worked on making letters and pictures in class to send to our friends.......

We all took turns going inside the huge mail truck ...

                                                    She showed us all the important packages...

                                        Kylie even got to test out the front seat and loved the big window!

                                              Bishop wanted to know what was in the boxes ;-)

                                Joshua wanted to test out the front seat too before leaving the truck!

      We all stood by the door and watched the mail truck drive off and waved goodbye to her!

Sam's letter to Kiersten...

After the visit from the mail woman we looked at the letter Will sent us and began learning how to write our letters real small on the envelope. The children have now started learning geography and understanding we live in a country (America), and the state we live in is Texas. Kiersten and Ashley were so excited to learn they both live in Missouri City with the same zip code! Sam and Kylie learned they both live in Sugar Land instead of Powder Sugar! This has led us to look at maps and see all the States we have in our country. We hope to send more letters to our friends throughout the year!

Our Vegetable Garden

We have had some good luck so far!  We found cucumbers.....

we found zucchini and strawberries.......

Our tomatoes are growing!  And so is our eggplant and squash!
