It all started one day with a conversation about water. The teachers did a little research and told the children that the people in Africa need to walk about 3 - 7 miles to collect water. It didn't take long before we started hearing comments from the children about taking money out of their piggy banks to send to Africa to help them get bottles of clean water.
We are now doing some investigating to learn about water wells. Some of us thought that wells were just for making wishes! But as we continue to read and look at pictures, we are seeing that wells have deep holes that go down in the Earth to find clean water.
We have also started touching the subject of rain water. The children think that the people in Africa should put cups out so that when it rains they can catch the rain water and drink it. Some of us think they should just stand outside with their mouths open and get a drink!
We are so excited and learning so much! We are touching on these topics so far:
- Layers of the Earth
- How the layers of the Earth filter water
- Aquifers
- Water Cycle
- Measuring the rain fall
- How a water well works
Beginning on the 28th we will start doing some science projects to help us understand these topics more. Please feel free to jump in if you have any ideas, materials, or questions on our project work.
We have been in contact with Living Water International, and they have offered to let the kids come visit their offices for a tour and to learn more about how they provide clean water for people around the world, and more about water wells. They have even suggested having the kids raise money to provide a well for people in Africa! How exciting! To learn more about this organization visit............ http://www.water.cc/
How exciting it is to be teachers for children who are not only learning so much, but who really have a passion for changing the world!
