Next on our list of baking was an apple pie! We wanted to bake something tasty using fruit, since we have been working on our fruit project! We had a special helper this time that guided us. It was one of our previous students who use to attend Little Wonders. She was a very big help! First we looked at the ingredients we needed and read them off to make sure we had everything!
We had to peel 8 apples first! Our teachers and special helper showed us how to use a peeler very carefully to make sure we got all the skin off. It was a little hard for some of us, but we kept trying... :o)
Everyone was so excited about peeling an apple, they all wanted to try!
After we almost had all the apples peeled, Mrs.Maryam brought in a food processor that would slice the apples into many pieces. We were really excited to see how fast it sliced the apples!
We began to learn what the slicer said on it and how to use it. Their were two buttons. One said ON and the other said OFF. We read each letter and sounded the word out to make sure when it was our turn we pushed the right button. Each child took a turn turning the food processor ON and OFF, and was responsible for reading and spelling the words as they pressed the buttons.
After learning each word, we all took a turn pushing the on button to slice the apples, than pushing the off button when it was time to turn it off.
We also practiced subtraction and fractions while we prepared the apples. We cut each apple in half, held up the two pieces and asked, "How many apples is this?" Some of the children said two, but when we held the pieces back together it only formed one apple. We did the same with cutting the apple in 4 pieces, and learning about 1/4.
By the time we got done with all of our 8 apples, the children were experts at the fractions ;0)
After slicing all the apples we added in a few ingredients that were needed and started mixing hard and fast!
After we added the top crust, we than had to dab on some milk and sugar to make it taste just right ;-)
Mmmhhhhhh!
As we were slicing the apples, we learned how to do some basic subtraction! We had a total of 8 apples and each time we took one away we counted to see how many were left. We got familiar with the subtraction by saying "Eight apples take away one equals how many?"
To help reinforce our lesson in subtraction, we worked on a subtraction sheet as our pie cooled down. We were so good at subtracting an apple away we didn't need the apples to count how many were left anymore!

We had a list of words we used during our project that our kids are beginning to read and recognize, feel free to practice these words with your child at home and also simple subtraction! Please come in and ask their teachers any questions regarding this work!
Words we were working on during this project:
-ON
-NO
-OFF
-APPLE
-CUP
We are working on subtracting 1 from 1 - 10
We are working on fractions 1/2 and 1/4
